NEW ORLEANS - The shocking video of Orleans Parish Prison inmates shooting drugs, drinking beer and handling a loaded gun inside a jail cell has led to the indictment of 14 current and former inmates on contraband charges.
The nine-count indictment unsealed Friday also includes a single charge against reported ringleader Arthur Johnson of being a felon with a firearm. Johnson - who was found in possession of the 2009 video - is featured in portions of the footage showing him carousing on Bourbon Street and boasting about being able to come and go freely from the lockup.
Johnson is currently serving a 10-year state prison sentence after being convicted of possession of heroin. Many of the other defendants named in the indictment remain behind bars on a variety of previous charges.
“I am pleased with the results that followed my request of District Attorney Cannizzaro to investigate this matter impartially," said Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman. "My office cooperated fully with the District Attorney on this investigation. Our office will continue to work with the DA to pursue prosecution of these individuals to the fullest extent of the law.”
In addition to Johnson, the defendants are Joseph Allen, Scottie Adams, Terry Rothschild, Lester Jones, Rashan Hester, George Anderson, Clarence Raymond, Maurice Peters, Emanuel Summers, Ronald Celestine, Ralph Doughty, Howard Lewis and Ellis Jenkins.
The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office said the grand jury investigation remains open and active.
