Besides the many kinds of cancers and destruction of the lungs, there is yet another reason to seek treatment for the addiction to cigarettes. Tobacco smoke leaves behind cancer-causing toxins that stick to surfaces in your home and clothes. That gets into dust and can be picked up on your fingers, especially dangerous to young children. This is now being called "third-hand smoke."
And finally, one-third of children in the U.S. are obese and the problem has become a top White House priority. Now a new study finds that teens who have Lap-Band surgery to limit their food intake lose much more weight than teens who go through intense diet, exercise and behavior modification programs. After two years, teens with the Lap-Band lost nearly 29 percent of their total body weight while those in the behavior change program only lost just more than 3 percent. And the none of the Lap-Band teens had pre-diabetes any more, but a quarter of the diet group still did.
Can acupuncture help people with fibromyalgia? A new study finds strong evidence that it may give people some temporary pain relief right after the treatment. But researches say the results are inconsistent. Acupuncture does not seem to help physical functioning, fatigue and sleep problems. Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition but the cause is unclear.
