NEW ORLEANS -- Many people know that lifestyle and diet during pregnancy have a significant impact on a child's health. But now research shows it's crucial for more than the nine months of pregnancy.

The latest research finds there are super foods critical to the health of your child, before conception, during pregnancy and into life.

"If you're missing just one nutrient at a crucial time of development, that can be a problem. For instance, sperm motility depends directly on antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids, found in wild Alaska salmon." said Dr. Steven Pratt, a clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of California, San Diego.

The baby's brain is developing in leaps and bounds before he or she is born and well in to the childhood, teen and early adult years. Women need food like blueberries and wild cold water fish.

"They have a lot of omega-3 fatty acids in their breast milk and those children have a higher IQ even at age seven, than those who don't. They have faster development of the brain, heart and the eyesight. And actually, even IQ at age 18 is better," he said.

Mothers who have a diet high in sugary foods and simple carbohydrates have high insulin in their blood, and that affects your baby's weight.

Dr. Pratt said that super foods will help you lower your risk of complications during pregnancy and your child's risk of chronic illness later in life.

"Men and women that are overweight, and women that are overweight during pregnancy, have overweight kids and those kids are doomed to a lifetime of weight control problems," Dr. Pratt explained. "As you're losing weight, you're mobilizing toxins in your fat, so you want to get that mobilized and out of your body prior to conception, rather during pregnancy or during breast feeding times."

And he said the 25 super foods will not only help your child, but mom's life and longevity well into her senior years.

In his SuperFoodsRx for Pregnancy book, Dr. Pratt suggests switching coffee for green tea because it is loaded with anti-oxidants, fights cancer and has less caffeine.
