LOCKPORT, La. - Several pipe bombs were taken from a wrecked car on Hwy. 308 causing the highway to be shut down for several hours Monday.

The injured driver, 53-year-old Tony A. Barisich, was airlifted to a hospital in serious condition. Officials won't release what charges he faces until Tuesday.

Officials said it was not known why Barisich had the explosive devices in his vehicle, but said they could have been deadly.

"We believe that this situation could’ve been a grave situation,” said Austin Banks, an agent with the ATF.

Banks says investigators recovered 10 pipe bombs from the truck – devices he describes as destructive.

“We don’t know what the intent was, but we do know that this is a destructive device, created to cause harm and damage.”

Authorities say the vehicle’s driver crashed while traveling southbound on Hwy. 308.

Officers buried the bombs in an empty field and detonated them Monday afternoon.
