The Lafourche Sheriff’s Office will conduct an insurance checkpoint Thursday during daylight hours in the southern part of the parish.
Along with checking to make sure each vehicle is properly insured, deputies will check to make sure any children in a vehicle are safely and properly restrained.
Motorists who encounter the checkpoint should be prepared to present a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance for the vehicle. Any motorists found to not have insurance will have their license plates removed and could have their vehicles impounded.
State law says drivers without insurance have three business days to provide proof of insurance or their license plate and auto registration can be destroyed. The reinstatement fee for a first offense is $50, a second is $150 and any subsequent offenses require a $500 fee.
