A Lockport man died of electrocution early Friday morning when he touched a lighted sign outside a Grande Isle bar, according to the Grand Isle Fire Department.

Austin Odell, 19, was outside of Rome’s Night Club and Blue Hawaiian Lounge, 2477 La. 1, when he made contact with a malfunctioning sign. Odell was transported to Our Lady of the Sea Hospital in Cut Off around 2 a.m. where he was pronounced dead on arrival, according to Tim Genevay, death investigator with the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office.

Investigators were on the scene Friday to try to determine what component of the sign malfunctioned to cause its casing to become electrified.

“It’s a team effort between the state fire marshal, the local fire department and the town of Grand Isle to make sure that this building is safe for the public,” said Aubrey Chaisson, chief of Grand Isle Fire Department.

An autopsy has been performed, but investigators are waiting on lab results to come back before making an official determination as to the cause of death, Genevay said. A preliminary autopsy found the cause of death was electrocution.

The building is shut down pending the investigation.

Odell played both baseball and soccer for Central Lafourche High School.
