BAYOU L’OURSE — Two people sleeping inside an Assumption Parish house were killed this morning by an intruder who then took his own life, police said.

Mark Massoletti, 52, and his son Micheal Massoletti, 23, were killed during a struggle that started just after 4 a.m. in the master bedroom of a home at 173 Felicia St., Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack said.

William S. Powers Jr., 32, 170 Felicia St., entered the unlocked house and attacked the sleeping Mark Massoletti, Waguespack said, waking the elder man’s girlfriend.

She ran to get help from Micheal Massoletti, who was sleeping in another room with his wife, who in turn ran to a neighbor’s house to call 911, Waguespack said. The three remaining adults struggled with their assailant. Mark and Michael were killed; Mark’s girlfriend was hurt.

Powers then fatally shot himself with a small caliber rifle, Waguespack said.

The Massolettis were cut, but the men’s cause of death will be determined in an autopsy set for today in New Orleans, authorities said. The two women suffered injuries that police describe as minor. They were being treated at a local hospital this morning.
