HOUMA, La. - Suspects fleeing police in a small truck slammed into two other cars and then had their truck burst into flames early Thursday morning, according to Thibodaux Police Chief Scott Silverii.

The incident occurred near Talbot Avenue and Duplantis just before 8 a.m.

Police said the incident began when they spotted a vehicle matching the one seen during a drive-by shooting a short time earlier. Police began to chase the truck, which nearly struck a police cruiser and then slammed into another vehicle, before bursting into flames.

Two men were arrested in the incident. Jason Chatman of Houma faces charges for aggravated flight from an officer while Loron Smith of Schriever was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear for carnal knowledge of a juvenile out of Terrebonne.

Authorities said the truck exploded into flames upon impact with the second vehicle. Smith surrendered to police after emerging from the passenger side, while Chatman was captured after fleeing from the driver's seat.

There are no reports seriously injuries following the crash, and authorities report that the Schriever Fire Department contained the fire that created a smoke pillar from the wreckage.

Thibodaux Chief of Police Scott Silverii announced the two were in custody after and that the Thibodaux Detectives Bureau is investigating Chatman and Smith for the drive-by shooting.
