NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A flood-damaged railroad bridge west of New Orleans has been repaired.

Canadian National Railway spokesman Patrick Waldron said repairs were completed Friday morning and the bridge was being inspected Friday afternoon in anticipation of it being opened later in the day.

Debris hitting a pier supporting the bridge over the Bonnet Carre Spillway is believed to have caused the damage, which was reported Tuesday.

The spillway was opened earlier this month, as was the Morganza spillway farther north, to relieve pressure on levees at New Orleans.

The Mississippi River at New Orleans has fallen below flood stage and the National Weather Service has canceled a flood warning for the area. A flood warning remained in effect for areas farther upriver, including Baton Rouge.
