NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The National Alliance to End Homelessness says New Orleans has the nation's second-highest rate of homelessness.

The Times-Picayune (http://bit.ly/ypwpiO) says a new report from the group estimates that nearly 6,700 homeless people live in New Orleans. That's a rate of 56 per 10,000 — barely lower than the 57 per 10,000 in Tampa, Fla., and nearly triple the national average of 21.

At the end of January, UNITY outreach workers in cities across the nation made an annual count at homeless hot spots such as shelters, service centers and outdoor gathering spots.

Martha Kegel, head of the homeless coalition called UNITY of Greater New Orleans, says only a small percentage of the area's homeless live in the open. She says that thousands squat in abandoned buildings.
