15-year-old boy waiting for school bus shot, killed

NEW ORLEANS – Police are investigating the early morning shooting death of a 15-year-old boy in Hollygrove, according to New Orleans Police Department spokesman Officer Shereese Harper.

Police were called to the scene of the shooting around 6 a.m., near the intersection of General Ogden and Palm streets, according to Harper.

The boy identified as Charles Sawyer was gunned down as he waited for the school bus, according to family members.  Neighbors said they heard at least 15 gunshots.

“According to investigators, Second District officers responded to a call of a ‘male shot’ and upon their arrival, found the victim lying in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his body,” Harper said in an e-mail.

Sawyer was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police.

Sawyer was a student at Sohpie B. Wright Charter School, according to the principal, who said that the school is bring in grief counselors for the students.
