NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The nursing school at Loyola University has secured nearly $1.2 million from the U.S. Public Health Service for aid to graduate nursing students who plan to teach. The program is for students getting a doctorate in nursing practice.
Up to 85 percent of the loan is forgiven if they obtain a full-time faculty position in a U.S. nursing school and stay there for at least four years.
Nursing school director Ann Cary says it is the biggest student-support award the university has ever offered.
Administrative coordinator Lisa Williams says tuition is about $34,000 a year.
She says the first 15 students to earn doctorates in nursing practice recently graduated and have nine months to find a full-time faculty job.
