BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana ethics board says state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education member Kira Orange-Jones can keep both her elected seat and her job as executive director of the New Orleans branch of Teach for America.
The advisory opinion unanimously issued Friday went against a recommendation the board made in June, which said Orange-Jones was prohibited from providing compensated services to TFA.
TFA has contracts with the state Department of Education and the Recovery School District which exceed $50,000 and requires a stamp of approval from members of BESE.
The board said Orange-Jones isn't an executive director of the whole organization and therefore meets an exception for employment a previous board carved out in 1982.
