WALKER, La. (AP) — Walker police say a pedestrian was critically injured after being hit by an SUV on the Interstate 12 east exit ramp at South Satsuma Road.

Capt. John Sharp tells The Advocate (http://bit.ly/1bvw2G8 ) 27-year-old Chad Wayne Cox, of Covington, was walking in the left lane of the ramp around 3:30 a.m. when he was struck by an SUV driven by 37-year-old Steven Michael Jones, of Baton Rouge.

Jones told police he was driving in the left lane behind an 18-wheeler when the 18-wheeler suddenly swerved to dodge Cox.

Sharp says Jones tried to swerve but was unable to avoid Cox.

Police believe weather and poor lighting were factors in the accident.
