LOCKPORT, La. (AP) — Authorities say coyotes are killing small dogs in the Lockport area.

The Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1yrTcMJ ) the latest attack took place early Wednesday morning when Melissa Gonzales put her Maltese, Itty Bitt, outside in her yard.

But before she could even turn around and walk back inside her Lockport house, the dog was gone.

Gonzales said she heard her dog bark, she looked around and saw a coyote with her dog in his mouth.

Gonzales' neighbors said she's not the only one who has recently lost a pet.

Just one block over. Tracy Cheramie (SHEHR'-uh-mee) said her dog has been missing since June 7.

Lockport Police Chief Warrant Vedros says officers searched Gonzales' neighborhood but found no remains of Itty Bitt.

Vedros says it's not unusual to see coyotes in the area.
