NEW ORLEANS - Hall H at the Morial Convention Center is filling up with media from across the world and all of New Orleans is a stage. Local business and civic leaders are making the most out of this opportunity to sell the city as a great place to work and play.
New Orleans Tourism Marketing chief Mark Romig says there are three basic messages. "One, that New Orleans and Louisiana is great place to visit. That it's a great place to live and work and that it's a great place to host a Super Bowl."
Dozens of radio stations and sports TV networks are set up and broadcasting live from the home of Super Bowl 47.
"I just can't believe it's so nice here," said Whitey Gleason from KGMZ "The Game" in San Francisco. "I can't believe they're thinking about playing the Super Bowl in the cold weather in New York next year. This is perfect. All the history, all the Super Bowl history here. Especially for 49er fans, having blown out Denver here earlier."
Sportscaster Tim Brando is in town to cover the big game for CBS.
He's also making the rounds, talking up his home state of Louisiana.
"To have been here within the last year twice for the Final Four and now a Super Bowl, both on our network means a great deal to me," said Brando. "To be able to come back here and tell all my friends that I work with in Northeast, see New Orleans is back. New Orleans is thriving."
Brando says the Super Bowl Host Committee asked him to be an unofficial ambassador for the city.
"Here we are, we see a bright and shinny Superdome and we see a facility like the Ernest M. Morial Convention Center that is I think is more equipped to handle 5,200 credentialed media then any other convention center I've ever been in for a Super Bowl," said Brando. "We do it better than anybody. We're also more hospitable than anybody that does this kind of thing."
Speaking of hospitality, media members at the convention center were treated to a bowl of Louisiana seafood for lunch.
"I've got some jambalaya, shrimp and sausage jambalaya here," said Paul Gleiser from KTTB, Tyler, Texas. "That's a good start. It's a great start. There's no food like New Orleans food."
"Our main message is to just welcome everybody to New Orleans," said Dudley Passman, Director of Food Services for Zatarain's, the company that hosted the lunch. "We want everybody to have a good time while they're here."
Romig says when it comes to tourism, the Super Bowl is the gift that keeps on giving for years to come.
"The game on Sunday night is going to be beamed out to 180 nations around the world," said Romig. "Twenty-five countries are here in New Orleans this week, covering this story. Over the next several months and into the next year or so, people will be remembering what they saw on television and the stories that they heard, so we think it will have a long lasting effect."
There are also some extracurricular activities planned for the media this week. Monday night there's a pub crawl through the Warehouse District. Tuesday night, there will be a huge media party at Mardi Gras World.
