OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — University of Mississippi students will vote this month on creating a new school mascot.

Colonel Reb, the university's longtime Southern gentleman character, was retired in 2003 because of perceptions that he represented Old South elements from which the university was trying to distance itself.

The vote is set for Feb. 23 and will indicate whether Ole Miss students support development of a new mascot or prefer to have none on the sidelines during athletic events, as is now the case.

Associated Student Body President Artair Rogers of Guntown told The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that Colonel Reb is not an option.
