NEW ORLEANS - Faced with declining membership, the Krewe of Alla is considering moving Uptown along the St. Charles parade route.

According to krewe officials, membership has declined due to tough economic times, competition among other krewes for members and the allure of riding on the St. Charles Avenue route.

"The board of directors must have 200 new members paid in full by June 1, or it will have no alternative but to consider its options to save the Krewe of Alla for future generations.  If Alla does not meet this goal, it likely will have to move to St. Charles Avenue parade route in 2014," said a statement Frank Borne Jr., secretary for Alla.

Whether on the West Bank or Uptown, the organization, which was founded in Algiers in 1932 and the location Algiers, Louisiana which was abbreviated to give the krewe its name, plans to continue its parade, but it must "renew itself and adapt to changing times so that it may continue its proud march into the foreseeable future.  Alla needs to position itself to attract and retain the riding members who are absolutely essential to the survival of any Carnival krewe," said Borne.

"One thing is certain:  the Alla tradition will continue."
