BATON ROUGE, La. - A proposed state constitutional amendment to protect Louisiana's Medicaid trust fund for the elderly from budget raids will appear on the November 6 ballot.
On Thursday, the state House overwhelmingly approved the measure.
Supporters said spending the money on the elderly only makes the state more fiscally responsible, because mis-spending the funds would force Louisiana to pay it back to the federal government.
But, critics said those backing the proposition favored moving around other money as part of budget balancing. They want to protect their funds.
