NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police had to taze a dog Tuesday night after it bit a 6-year-old boy on the leg, sending the child to the hospital.

NOPD spokesman Officer Garry Flot said the incident happened in New Orleans East in the 4900 block of Tulip Street.

Flot said the dog, which he believes to be a pit bull, managed to get away from its owner. The dog then bit the boy on the leg.

The owner managed to get the dog inside, Flot said, but the dog was still acting irate. Police were able to apprehend the dog after using a Taser and controling him with a leash stick. The SPCA has taken away the dog and is investigating the attack.

Flot said the child is in the hospital and is in stable condition.

"We're very emotional right now, just trying to find out if he's doing OK," said Lillie Thompson, the victim's grandmother.

Thompson said the victim, whom she said is named Adrian, was outside with his cousins. She said the dog was outside with a little boy, and the dog attacked her grandson after the dog got away from him.

The metro area has seen a recent spate of dog attacks in the past week: Last Thursday a pit bull attacked a 7-year-old girl in Algiers and the day before a pit bull mauled a 5-year-old girl in Gentilly.

In Metairie last week, deputies shot and killed a pit bull in the backyard of a home after they investigated what they believed to be the sound of gunfire. It was in fact the dog's owner shooting off a potato gun.
