NEW ORLEANS – Five Archdiocese of New Orleans schools will receive repairs from $25 million in funding assistance from FEMA, it was announced Thursday.

The Archdiocese said the funding comes from damages incurred at 32 Archdiocesan facilities but that the money is being funneled into repairs of eight buildings at the five schools.

The buildings slated for repair include: Cathedral Academy’s main and secondary buildings, St. Leo the Great’s main and secondary buildings, St. Peter Claver’s main and kindergarten buildings, as well as the main buildings at St. Rita and St. Stephen.

The Archdiocese said its school system has experienced a decrease of 9,000 students post Katrina and that when the schools’ buildings are repaired, they can be used to help accommodate the student population of Archdiocese schools that have not re-opened.

The Archdiocese of New Orleans is beginning to take a rational approach to the repair of buildings and their potential use. Now take a careful look at the other buildings, not on the list, that can be repaired for other uses - day care center, assisted care facilities for the elderly, perhaps even a high school for the arts, a high school for the gifted. Look to the needs of your parishioners and the needs of this city and the potential growth and accomplishment that will be the fruit of careful planning and business like decisions. Yes business like decisions, dears. Each use of every building and its potential is a business decision for the good of those that can use it.
