NEW ORLEANS -- A body recovered from Lake Pontchartrain by police was identified as the driver who crashed off Causeway bridge Monday.
He was identified as a 19-year-old male who recently graduated from a local high school, according to officials. His body was recovered from the lake Tuesday morning and was brought to Bonnabel Boat Launch.
The discovery of the body comes after divers went back into the lake Tuesday morning, trying to find the driver.
Monday afternoon, he was driving a pickup truck when he lost control of his vehicle, and it plunged into the lake about three miles from Metairie.
Causeway officials say the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel of his Ford F-250 pickup truck before going off the bridge around 4 p.m.
Causeway Bridge General Manager Carlton Dufrechou said a Good Samaritan stopped to help and spotted the victim in the water, and that he said he "actually yelled to the guy to see if he was okay. The individual initially said yes, he was. He indicated he was alone in the vehicle. It appeared that he was trying to take boots or shoes off, and according to the eyewitness, within 20 seconds he went under water," said Dufrechou.
