NEW ORLEANS -- Tulane University sophomore Max Kessler is putting in double time over the next week preparing for finals and the New Orleans Bowl.
The Green Wave is headed for its first bowl game in over a decade. Nearly 50,000 fans, students and alumnae are expected to fill the Superdome in a week.
It’s a moment Kessler would hate to miss.
"It is the first time we have been in a long time and the first time we have had a winning record. It is just really exciting," Kessler said.
Tulane Athletic Director Rick Dickson said the school has sold just about all of its tickets for the game. He predicts this could be largest New Orleans Bowl on record and a rival for the BCS bowl “popularity pie.”
"Between our two fan bases it has a great chance to maybe be the biggest bowls outside of our BCS bowls, and that really says something," Dickson said.
Mark Romig of the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation said, “We think the hotels will be impacted in a very strong way and the economic impact will be about $25-$30 million, so that will be a big solid weekend for the city.”
Romig said hotels will fill during peak times, making the bowl a kickoff to a season of revenue streaming into the city. A professional wrestling event is on the cusp as well as the Sugar Bowl.
Experts say that's a nearly $100 million booster shot into the economy.
Tulane will take on Louisiana-Lafayette in the New Orleans Bowl Dec. 21. This will mark Tulane’s first bowl appearance since winning the Hawaii Bowl in 2002.
