METAIRIE, LA – Construction is set to begin on the Bucktown harbor after parish officials held an official groundbreaking Wednesday morning.
Rusty Gaude of the LSU Ag Center called the project a first step to restoring the area and developing commercial business.
Plans for the harbor include installing two piers with 70 boat slips and eventually a fishing pier, overlooks and more than 250 boat slips.
Phase One of the plan brings electricity, water and sewerage to the area. By July fishermen are expected to be operating on the site.
Leaders say the fresh seafood that results from the harbor will spur the economy in the entire New Orleans area.
