NEW ORLEANS -- A New Orleans cab driver arrested Tuesday for an alleged sexual assault of a passenger was formally booked Wednesday on charges of simple rape and second-degree kidnapping, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office website.
Sohail Khan, 40, was booked in the sexual assault of a 20-year-old female passenger. As of Wednesday morning, Khan's first appearence before a judge is still pending, and no bond has been set.
Detectives said the Yellow Cab driver picked up the 20-year-old victim last Thursday morning at a business on Tchoupitoulas Street.
The woman passed out on the cab ride home. When she woke up, she found the man was sexually assaulting her, said police. The driver eventually dropped her off blocks away from her intended destination in the East Carrollton neighborhood. Police logs list the incident occurring in the 7600 block of Plum Street. Shortly after the attack, the woman went to a medical facility and called police.
Police later released a composite sketch of the suspect.
NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas credited GPS tracking systems and video footage as being instrumental in helping police break the case.
According to the NOPD, Khan has a criminal arrest record in Jefferson Parish for getting into a fight with a patron, and in New Jersey for loitering for prostitution.
