NEW ORLEANS - A large fire inside of a vacant home on Delachaise Street spread to an occupied four-plex next door, leaving at least two families homeless early Saturday morning.
The fire broke out at around 12:30 a.m. in the 3000 block of Delachaise. Fire department officials said that by the time crews arrived on the scene, the fire had already extended itself to the home next door. Two of the four units in that building were occupied. The families were able to escape safely, but their homes were destroyed.
The fire department said that interviewing the neighbors allowed them to determine that the building where the fire began had been empty since Katrina and had suffered severe damage prior to the fire.
The Red Cross was on the scene to provide temporary shelter and clothing to the victims of the fire.
