LAPLACE, La. -- Christmas came early for dozens of families in St. John the Baptist Parish on Saturday. Much of the area was hit hard by Hurricane Isaac.

In response, a Toys for Tots giveaway took place in LaPlace to help those still recovering.

"With everything that happened with Hurricane Isaac. A lot of kids lost a lot of things. This kind of helped retrieve some of that lost hope of having a good christmas," said Brian Bertrand, Unit Commander of the St. John the Baptist Parish contingent of the Young Marines.

From bags of toys to bicycles, community donations were lined up inside the St. John Parish Community Center. Leading the toy giveaway charge was the sheriff's office, the Sheriff's Office Young Marines and St. John Parish fire departments.

Organizers say 407 families signed up for help and extra toys were on stand-by for those not on the list.

"All parents want their children to be happy at christmas but if you're in hard times..we've had a lot going on here this is such a help to the families and the community," said St. John Parish President Natalie Robottom who attended the event.

Parents like Kay Lee are grateful for the helping hand. Now her daughter's christmas will be complete.

"She would have got the gifts that I bought her and my momma bought her but she wouldn't have gotten everything that she wanted," said Lee.

For a parish still recovering from Hurricane Isaac -- this giveaway helps spread the holiday spirit.

"To be able to help somebody else and to see that smile on their face when they get a toy or a bike. Is what this is all about, that's what christmas is about," said Bertrand.
