COVINGTON, La. - Covington Police Chief Richard Palmisano has been fired, according to Covington Mayor Mike Cooper.

Cooper said the firing comes after two officers were arrested in March, showing that trouble persisted at the Covington Police Department.

The officers were charged with simple battery and malfeasance in office in connection with allegations of using excessive force on a person who had been arrested for shoplifting.

"I hold Chief Palmisano accountable for the actions and behavior of his police officers. I had made it clear to all in the Covington Police Department that officers' use of excessive force would not be tolerated and nonadherence would result in severe discipline," Cooper said. "It was my duty to terminate Chief Palmisano on behalf of the citizens of Covington to avoid further detriment to the City and the Covington Police Department."

Captain Jack West, who has 30 years with the CPD, was selected by the mayor to be captain-in-charge.  The vacancy will not be immediately filled, Cooper said.
