DENHAM SPRINGS, La. -- Livingston Parish emergency officials are on the scene of an oil tanker fire that has forced the evacuation of nearly three dozen homes.

According to the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office, the fire started around 10:30 p.m. Thursday. It is unknown what caused one of two oil holding tanks to rupture and catch fire.

The explosion was so powerful witnesses said it almost knocked them off their feet. Crews were going to use foam to put the fire out, but decided against it, opting to let the fire burn itself out, which will take several hours.

Once the fire is extinguished, residents evacuated in that area will be allowed to return home. Officials said the oil is safe and in a containment wall. There were no reports of any injuries.
