NEW ORLEANS - Police are investigating at least five weekend shootings, including one where a 4-year-old was grazed by a bullet, and another that left a teenager shot to the face Sunday night in the Bayou St. John area.
The teenager was shot just after 8 p.m. in the 3100 block of Orleans Ave., according to Officer Hilal Williams, a New Orleans Police Department spokeswoman. He was coherent at the time police arrived and was transported to the hospital, she said.
Earlier Sunday evening, two teenagers were shot in the 2700 block of Jackson Ave. The victims, ages 18 and 15, were both shot in the hip. Williams said the teens' injuries appeared to be non-life threatening.
About 5 p.m. Sunday, a man was shot in the neck in the 7200 block of Chef Menteur Highway, Williams said. No word on his condition.
In the most high profile incident, about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, a 44-year-old woman was killed, and her 4-year-old grandson wounded in a shooting inside a home in the 13000 block of Maple Wood Drive in New Orleans East. The child was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Also, at 2 a.m. Sunday, a shooting happened in the 3300 block of Morrice Duncan. A man was shot to the leg, Williams said.
The Sunday shootings cap a violent weekend in the city, following a murder Friday night in which a 19-year-old man was shot dead in Algiers on Southlawn Blvd.
