NEW ORLEANS -- A five-year-old boy drowned Saturday while swimming in Lake Pontchartrain under the Seabrook (Sen. Ted Hickey) Bridge, police said.

The boy, whose name was not released, was swimming with family and friends when his mother noticed he was missing shortly before 5:30 p.m., according to Officer Hilal Williams, a New Orleans police spokeswoman.

Members of the group began searching for the boy, at which time he was located and pulled from the water.

The boy was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No word on whether any charges would be filed or whether his death would be ruled accidental.
