A former Tangipahoa Parish deputy faces a maximum of 40 years in prison and a possible fine of $2 million after entering a guilty plea to a charge of intent to distribute five or more grams of cocaine.

Kevin Whittington, 44, of Springfield, Louisiana, entered the plea Tuesday, according to U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.
Court documents indicate that Whittington admitted that on July 6, 2009, while he was serving as a deputy assigned to the Tangipahoa Parish Jail, he met with an informant with the DEA and while under surveillance he accepted a cell phone, some crack cocaine and $700 in cash and agreed to supply it to an inmate in the jail.
