NEW ORLEANS - The Gretna ferry will be discontinued on June 30, while the Algiers - Canal Street ferry's hours will be cut down, the Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

The Algiers - Chalmette ferry service will remain as it is now and the DOTD said it will be treated as a state route because drivers in that area don't have nearby alternatives to cross the river.

Beginning on July 1, the DOTD will utilize available funding to continue the operations.

The Algiers/Canal ferry's hours will now run from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday through Friday and for eight hours each weekend day.

A DOTD spokesperson said the schedule could be adjusted based on funding and ridership levels.
