NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Orleans Parish School Board raised $2.7 million by auctioning off some of its idle and neglected properties Thursday morning.
The auction went off despite a request from Mayor Mitch Landrieu that it be postponed for three months while the city checked to see if the sale was in line with the city’s master plan.
Four of the eight properties up for auction were purchased. The others will be auctioned at a later date at a lower price.
School board officials said the properties have been costing the system for upkeep and taking money away from students in classrooms.
