METAIRIE, La. -- Investigators are looking for the driver of a vehicle who hit a woman, leaving her in critical condition at a hospital Wednesday afternoon, according to Col. John Fortunato, a spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

Around 2:15 p.m., the woman was hit at the intersection of Transcontinental Drive and Rye Street, Fortunato said, and was taken to University Hospital.

According to witnesses, "an elderly female who lives in the area where the accident occurred was attempting to cross from the west side of Transcontinental to east side when she was struck by a silver colored four-door vehicle," Fortunato said.

According to witnesses, the vehicle was traveling west on Rye Street, then turned south on to Transcontinental Drive where it hit the woman and fled south on Transcontinental, Fortunato said.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
