NEW ORLEANS – Calling it one of the best events in its history, the organizers of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival announced Thursday that more than 400,000 people attended this year’s event, with the absence of any rain no doubt contributing to large crowds.
This year’s attendance figure tops the 375,000 mark set last year, and matches the 2009 attendance level of an estimated 400,000 people for the seven-day event.
Overall attendance peaked in 2001, when an estimated 650,000 people attended the event.
“Fans experienced the best of New Orleans and Louisiana under the perfect setting of sunny skies, and the Festival produced countless memorable moments for all,” said the festival in a press statement.
“From the first notes of Coco Robicheaux's guitar on Friday, April 29 to the farewell performance of the Radiators on Sunday, May 8 - with too many highlights in between to mention - Jazz Fest 2011 will be remembered as something truly special.”
The 2012 festival is slated for April 27 - May 6.
