NEW ORLEANS -- Entergy crews worked to restore power to portions of Algiers after nearly 5,000 were without power early Thursday morning. (See Entergy map)

Power was reported out for a large swath of Algiers around 5 a.m. By 8 a.m., the power had been restored to most of Algiers, with only 16 residences still in the dark.

The power outage caused traffic problems on the West Bank, as traffic lights were out along General Meyer Avenue, Holiday Drive and Kabel Drive. Accidents occurred at Holiday and MacArthur Boulevard and Holiday and General De Gaulle Drive, possibly as a result of non-working traffic lights.

The cause of the outage was due to a failed underground power cable at substation, according to Entergy spokesman Robert Adams. Adams said that Entergy crews went around the Algiers area to switch the power manually to parts of the community back on line.
