NEW ORLEANS -- A 19-year-old man is behind bars, charged in a daylight shooting on North Villere Street that left one man dead, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Michael Matthews, 19, was booked with second degree murder in the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Kevin Stewart, according to police spokeswoman Remi Braden.

According to a statement from police,  "Matthews shot Stewart shortly after 1:30 in the afternoon of May 1 as Stewart was standing outside in the 3600 block of North Villere Street.  Stewart was brought to a nearby hospital where he died a couple of hours later."

Matthews was seen fleeing the scene on a bicycle with a gun his hand, according to police. Police credit residents with providing information leading to Matthews' arrest at his home on Congress Street Sunday, according to police.

"Members of the NOPD’s Special Operations Division, SWAT team and Homicide detectives executed the search warrant early yesterday morning, and found a loaded pistol under Matthew’s bed, an assortment of ammunition, as well as clothes and a bicycle matching witnesses’ descriptions," said Braden.
