NEW ORLEANS – After receiving an aggravated battery call, police arrived on scene to find a man with a gunshot wound and a sketchy story of how the incident occurred, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
On Monday, police showed up at the intersection of Camp and Pleasant streets to discover a man who claimed he was walking down Pleasant Street when an unknown black vehicle pulled up and fired one round at him before fleeing in a downtown direction.
The man was transported to the hospital while police investigated the scene, the NOPD said.
Police began suspecting the man had actually shot himself after taking into consideration that the incident occurred in the middle of the day on a busy street and the man’s description was vague.
Footage from nearby stores, a shell casing and disputing evidence led police to re-interview the man at the hospital.
Once he was confronted with contradicting evidence, the man admitted to shooting himself while trying to move his weapon from his backpack to his waistband, police said.
The man told police where he stashed the weapon and they found it to be stolen from Jefferson Parish.
The man was booked with possession of stolen property, according to the NOPD. He had no prior record and the incident was recorded as a medical, accidental discharge of a weapon.
