CHALMETTE, La. – A 55-year-old man was arrested after shooting a drinking buddy whom he claimed had walked into his trailer while he was sleeping.

William Bentley, 55, of Kiln, Miss., was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated battery. The victim, identified as 33-year-old Ceairon Bailey, was in critical condition in a local hospital, according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred in the 1900 block of Laura Drive.

Spokesman Steve Cannizaro said Bentley called the sheriff’s office to report the shooting just before 10 p.m. Wednesday. They said Bailey was found face down in the front yard with a bullet hole in his upper body.

According to Cannizaro, Bentley said the two men had been drinking earlier in the evening and that Bailey had been going in and out of Bentley’s trailer, but that at some point he told the victim that he was going to sleep for the evening.

Cannizaro said Bentley told them that he was awakened a while later to see a shadowy figure standing in the trailer and that he grabbed a nearby revolver and shot him.

Bentley told deputies that the door to the trailer wasn’t locked.

Bentley said the two men had just met earlier that day as the victim had moved into the trailer park.
