CHALMETTE, La. – Deputies arrested a drug suspect out on bond Tuesday for fleeing a Chalmette courtroom because he didn't want to return to jail, according to St. Bernard Parish Sheriff James Pohlmann.
Deputies caught Cyprian Robertson, 37, near the Industrial Canal Bridge on St. Claude Avenue, after he hit a vehicle on the ramp and caused his car to catch fire, Pohlmann said. Deputies had laid down spikes on the road to stop Robertson’s vehicle.
Robertson, who suffered a broken leg in the crash, told deputies he fled the courtroom because he “couldn’t go back to jail.”
Before his escape, Robertson was offered a plea deal that would have put him behind bars for seven years.
Robertson has two past convictions on drug charges. He was out on bound of charges of possession of heroin, possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana.
He’ll be booked with aggravated flight from officers, reckless operation and other traffic charges, and driving with a suspended license.
The Industrial Canal Bridge was closed for at least 30 minutes as crews responded to the scene.
