The New Orleans City Council members announced they will take a ten percent pay cut as the city tries to balance its budget for the current year.
The announcement comes a little more than a week after Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced that he and his administration would take a ten percent cut.
The move is part of a larger move that has the city implementing furloughs for employees and reviewing contracts to help cut the budget.
Last October the council voted itself a raise by a 4-3 vote. That vote was taken before the current members were elected, though some of the council remains.
Council member salaries went from $43,500 to $83,500.
