NEW ORLEANS -- A man was shot in the French Quarter while attempting to defend himself and two others from an armed robbery attempt early Monday morning, the New Orleans Police Department said.

According to the NOPD, a man and two women were walking in the 600 block of Dumaine Street searching for a cap when three black men approached from behind, one brandishing a handgun.

The armed assailant demanded money but the man searching for the taxi knocked the guy away, NOPD spokesman Garry Flot said. The pistol fired, however, hitting the man in the right shoulder.

The man who was shot, along with the two women he was with, were all able to give police descriptions of the three men who approached from behind, adding that they were all wearing hoodie jackets, the Flot said.

All three fled on foot from Dumaine Street to Bourbon, and then east as they eluded arrest, Flot said.

The man who was shot was taken to University Hospital, where he is in stable condition.
