NEW ORLEANS -- Police are searching for a cab driver who allegedly raped a 20-year-old woman while driving her home early Wednesday.

Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas released a sketch of the suspect today, asking for the  public's help in identifying the driver.

"I would also like to send a message to the cab drivers of New Orleans," Serpas said at a news conference this afternoon. "Cab drivers are good, professional, hard-working people. You know who this guy is. You know who he is. Tell him to turn himself in. We are coming to get him."

According to police, the young woman took a cab from a business on Tchoupitoulas Street around 3:30 a.m. Wednesay

Police say she passed out on the cab ride home. And when she woke up, she found the man was sexually assaulting here. The driver eventually dropped her off blocks away from her destination in the East Carrollton neighborhood.

Police logs list the incident at 7600 block of Plum Street, though Serpas would not say if that's where the assault took place.

Shortly after the attack, the woman went to a medical facility and called police.

New city regulations mandate that  taxicabs have video cameras GPS-tracking capabilities.

"We are working closely with the taxicab bureau right now to determine if that can give us any leads or help us in any way," Serpas said.

The police chief declined to release other details on the crime.

Police say the man is about 40 years-old, about 5- foot-9-inches tall, with a muscular build and no facial hair.

Police ask that anyone with information call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or Special Victim Section Detective Haynes at 504-658-5521.
