NEW ORLEANS – Officials from the New Orleans Police Department are touting the latest crime statistics, as they show some encouraging numbers in New Orleans.
With 34 murders from April through June, according to the Uniform Crime Report, murder is down nearly 35 percent in the second quarter of 2013 compared to the same time period last year, when 52 murders were committed in 2012.
For the first half of the year, murder is down 21 percent over the first half of 2012, with 77 murders for the first sixth months of 2013 compared to 97 for 2012.
According to the NOPD, armed robberies are down by 6 percent and auto theft is down by 15 percent compared to 2012.
Not all the numbers fell, though. Property crime total was up nearly 5 percent, thefts were up 11 percent and burglaries up 4 percent.
