NEW ORLEANS -- The NOPD investigated two separate "suspicious packages" late Thursday night, but ultimately neither posed a threat to the public, according to officials.

The NOPD bomb squad was called out to the 600 block of Canal Street. Police say there was a suspicious backpack at that location.

A bomb squad and bomb-sniffing dogs determined that the bag posed no threat, and upon opening it up, police found just clothes inside.

The NOPD also investigated a suspicious package earlier in the night in the 600 block of Poydras Street, near the criminal court. But they said just before 10 p.m. that it was a false alarm.

It's the second night in a row that bomb squads were called out to suspicious packages in the New Orleans area.
