NEW ORLEANS -- Sources have confirmed to Eyewitness News that former Mayor Ray Nagin has been subpoenaed to appear before a federal grand jury later this week.

It appeared that Nagin had been of interest to federal prosecutors in recent months following the guilty pleas of several of his associates.

In June, a former city contractor, Frank Fradella, entered a guilty plea saying the former mayor, while not identified by name in court papers but referred to as "Public Official A," accepted a $50,000 payoff and free granite for his family's granite countertop business.

Fradella's plea followed a guilty plea by former city technology officer Greg Meffert and the conviction of former contractor Mark St. Pierre.

Nagin has not been charged with a crime and could plead the Fifth Amendment and refuse to testify when he appears before the grand jury.
