NEW ORLEANS -- Some inmates housed at Orleans Parish Prison are being moved ahead of Tropical Storm Karen.

According to Philip Stelly with the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, 298 male inmates and 134 female inmates who are held in the temporary housing tents at OPP are being moved as a precaution.

The inmates are being transported out of the jail on buses. The inmates will be housed at an undisclosed location, Stelly said.

“Approximately 70 individuals have been released under the authority of the Judge’s En Banc Order," Sheriff Marlin Gusman said. "Until notified by the court, the Intake and Processing Center is refusing to accept for intake, booking, detention, or other confinement, any persons arrested for violation of municipal and traffic offenses or warrants. except those persons arrested on outstanding domestic violence or weapons charges."

Once the storm passes, Stelly said, officials will assess whether the prisoners will return to OPP.
