NEW ORLEANS - Federal prosecutors are opposing a delay in the public corruption trial of former Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard, whose public corruption trial is slated to start Oct. 1.

Earlier this week, Broussard, and co-defendant Tom Wilkinson asked for a continuance citing two reasons - new charges that were recently added, and Broussard's continuing battle with cancer.

In court documents filed Friday, the government filed an objection, saying that the new charges are no big surprise and that there is no evidence suggesting Broussard's medical conditions justify a delay.

Broussard and Wilkinson are accused of participating in payroll fraud and kickback schemes.
