NEW ORLEANS -- Hours before the biggest night of her young life, Houma native Quvenzhané Wallis has been tabbed to play the iconic role of Annie in a remake of the classic 1982 musical of the same name.
“With the recent Academy Award® nomination and critical acclaim, Quvenzhané Wallis is a true star and we believe her portrayal as Annie will make her a true worldwide star. She is an extraordinary young talent with an amazing range, not only as an actress but as a singer and dancer, and we can’t wait for audiences to further discover her,” reads a statement from Overbrook Entertainment.
The 9-year-old Wallis is up for a Best Actress nominee in Sunday night's Academy Awards for her role in Beasts of the Southern Wild. She's the youngest ever nominee in that category.
Willow Smith, actor Will Smith's daughter, was originally slated to star in the role, but eventually grew out of it after delays in production. The film is scheduled to be released in the 2014 holiday season.
